What is Commerce? A Simple Introduction for Beginners (Class 11 & B.Com)

When you heard about Accounting, Finance, Money Circulation, Corruption and most importantly — Commerce. What was your first reaction?

Easiest subject? Day-to-day calculations? Or the heart of the market?

Uhm... quite confusing, right? 😅

When you cleared your 10th, you must have thought — "What should I choose? Science, Arts or Commerce?" And even if you thought about Commerce, the next question was — "But what will I even study in it?"

Everything felt so overwhelming. And after actually taking Commerce? Not a single platform explains it in a way that actually makes sense. That's what makes it feel like the most complicated subject out there.

So — Hi! I'm Aishira. 👋

I'm a Commerce student who understands every single problem, a Commerce student faces. And I created this space just for you.

Whether you want to get better at your 12th boards, understand how to manage your own business someday, or just take control of your own financial health — you're in the right place.

Here, I'll be teaching and guiding you through everything — Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Studies — all of it.

And the best part? At the end of every article, you'll be 1% ahead of everyone else. 💪

You don't need to rewrite anything. Just take your time, read everything carefully, and try to relate every term to your day-to-day life.

So, This is Day-1 and Let's understand the Commerce world — by having a heart to heart conversation. 💓

Okay, before we start — I want you to do something.

Look around the room you're sitting in right now.

That phone in your hand? Commerce. The chair you're sitting on? Commerce. The snack you're eating while reading this? Also Commerce. 😄

Everything around you exists because of Commerce. And yet — nobody actually explains what Commerce REALLY means in real life. They just hand you a textbook and say "read chapter one."

Not here. Here we talk like real people . So let's go! 🤝

So What Actually is Commerce?

Let me give you the proper definition first

Commerce is the branch of study that deals with business, trade, finance, accounting, banking, economics, and management.

But in simple words?

Commerce teaches you how money, businesses, and markets work.

That's it. That's the whole thing.

Now let me make it even more real for you.

Think about your morning chai ☕

Someone grew the tea leaves in Assam. Someone packed them in a factory. Someone transported them to your city. A shopkeeper bought them and sold them to you and Your mom made that perfect cup.

That entire journey from farm to your cup? THAT is Commerce in action or a subject which actually works in real life or useful in real life.

Commerce is the system that connects the person who makes something to the person who needs it. It includes trade, transport, banking, insurance, advertising, and warehousing — all working together silently so that things you need actually reach you.

Without Commerce? That chai never reaches your cup. And that's a tragedy none of us can afford. 😤

What Do You Actually Study in Commerce?

Okay so when you take Commerce in 11th  here's what your world looks like:

Accountancy This is where you learn how businesses record and manage their money. Every rupee that comes in, every rupee that goes out — Accountancy tracks it all. Think of it like maintaining a diary, but for money. 📒

Business Studies Ever wondered how big companies like Tata or Reliance are organized? Who makes decisions? How do they manage thousands of employees? Business Studies answers all of this. It's basically the "how businesses actually work" subject.

Economics Why do prices go up during festivals? Why does the government increase petrol prices? How do countries become rich or poor? "Economics explains all the big money decisions made by people, businesses, and governments."

Mathematics (Optional but Powerful 💪) If numbers don't scare you — take Maths with Commerce. It opens doors to finance, statistics, data analysis, and much stronger career options. Totally worth it!

Informatics Practices / Computer Applications (Optional) In today's digital world, knowing computers alongside Commerce is a superpower. Excel, databases, basic coding — this subject gives you that edge.

And since you're reading this  chances are you've already taken Commerce or you're thinking about it. Either way, you're in the right place. 😊

Why Do We Even Need to Learn Commerce?

Because Commerce is going to be a part of our entire life whether we study it or not.

Every time you spend money — Commerce. Every time a business pays its employees — Commerce. Every time the government collects taxes from your family — Commerce. Every time you see prices going up — Economics, which is also a part of Commerce.

Here's the thing nobody tells you — The people who understand Commerce make better decisions. With money. With business. With life.

They know how to read a bill. They understand why prices rise. They know how to save taxes legally. They understand how businesses actually work from the inside.

Learning Commerce isn't just about passing your 12th boards. It's about understanding the world you're already living in  and being smart enough to navigate it. 💡

What Are the Types of Commerce?

Commerce has three main types. And I promise — you already know all three, you just didn't know the names! 😄

1. Home Trade (Internal Commerce) Buying and selling within your own country.

Your kirana shop buying goods from a Delhi wholesaler? Home Trade. A Mumbai company selling products to someone in Chennai? Home Trade. Anything that stays within India's border — that's Home Trade.

2. Foreign Trade (External Commerce) When two different countries buy and sell from each other.

India exporting tea and spices to Europe? Foreign Trade. India importing iPhones and crude oil from other countries? Also Foreign Trade.

Because of Foreign Trade we can eat Oreos made in America while sitting in India. 🌍 and there are more of that.......

3. E-Commerce Oh, this one you DEFINITELY know. 😄

Ordering food on Zomato at midnight? E-Commerce. Shopping on Myntra during a sale at 2am? E-Commerce. Selling handmade stuff on Instagram? Yep — that's E-Commerce too.

E-Commerce is simply Commerce that happens over the internet. And in today's world — it's the fastest growing type of all.

What Software Do You Need in the Commerce World?

Okay THIS is something school never teaches you — but in real life, knowing these tools makes you incredibly valuable. 💪

Tally Prime THE most important software for any Commerce student in India. Every accountant, every business, every CA office uses Tally. GST filing, inventory management, accounts — it handles everything money-related in a business.

Start learning Tally in class-11 and make a good practice in it and  boom you're already ahead of most people.

Microsoft Excel Don't underestimate Excel. Budgets, financial statements, salary sheets, data analysis — every office in India uses it daily. If you can make a proper Excel sheet, you'll always have work.

Zoho Books / QuickBooks Modern accounting software used by startups and small businesses. As India goes more digital, knowing these is becoming really valuable.

Google Sheets Free, works on your phone, easy to learn. Perfect starting point before you move to Excel.

SAP (For Later) Advanced software used by big companies like TCS, Infosys, and MNCs. You don't need it right now — but as you grow, SAP knowledge opens huge doors.

and there are lots of great tools and skill now available in this year and there will be more in future,  so we will discuss on them more deeply (later). 😊

What is the Scope After Taking Commerce?

And now — the question every Commerce student gets asked at every family gathering. 😅

"Beta Commerce liya? Toh kya karoge?"

So, tell them that "Oh, PLENTY options are available. Let me share few scopes that are trending in markets." 💪

Chartered Accountant (CA) — One of the most respected and highest paying professions in India. CAs handle accounts, taxes, and financial planning for companies and individuals.

Company Secretary (CS) — CS professionals manage the legal and compliance side of companies. Stable, well-paying, and always in demand.

Financial Analyst — Analyzing markets, investments, and financial data to help businesses make smart money decisions.

Investment Banker — Helping companies raise money, manage mergers, and navigate big financial deals. High pressure, high reward.

B.Com, BBA, MBA — These degrees open corporate, finance, and management careers across every industry in India and globally.

So next time someone asks "Commerce liya toh kya karoge?" — just smile and say "Sab kuch." 😄
